Fearing the reaper (drone)

In the latest, probably eeriest example of civilian life imitating war, reports indicate that police all over the country want to employ high tech drones to engage in domestic surveillance operations. That?s right — thanks to 10 years of war and the military?s drive to get increasingly sophisticated equipment to hunt down former sheepherders and poppy farmers armed with old Soviet rifles and cell phones, law enforcement here will soon be able to regularly deploy unmanned aircraft into the sky to ‚hover and stare‘ on the domestic population, engaging enough sensors and cameras — and who knows what weapons — to finally obliterate whatever expectation of privacy Americans had left…

TiaLinx’s Cougar20-H surveillance robot can peer through walls, see you breathe

By Donald Melanson posted Feb 7th 2011 3:58AM

You may be able to outrun it, but you probably won’t be able to hide from TiaLinx’s new Cougar20-H surveillance robot. While it might not look like much, the bot packs an impressive RF array that’s not only able to detect movement within a building (though concrete walls, no less), but is even able to detect a person breathing inside a building at „long standoff distances.“ Perhaps not surprisingly, complete details are largely being kept under wraps (the bot was developed with some help from the U.S. Army), but this isn’t simply a prototype — it’ll be rolling out next month and is expected to be put to use by various law enforcement and government agencies. Head on past the break for the official press release.

Robot hummingbird spies unveiled

Orange News [UK]

02/22/11

A hummingbird-shaped spy drone that could fly undetected into enemy positions has been unveiled in the US. The Nano Hummingbird has a wingspan of 6.5 inches and weighs 19 grams, less than an AA battery. … Pentagon contractor AeroVironment claim they have accomplished a technical milestone never before achieved — controlled precision hovering and fast-forward flight of a two-wing, flapping wing aircraft. Army chiefs hope to use the drone’s tiny camera to spy on enemy positions in war zones without arousing detection and eventually deploy it into both rural and urban environments…

No surveillance without oversight

Given the FBIs record of fallibility – and without genuine safeguards for citizens – this $1bn biometrics project is alarming.
